The Difference Between A Dentist and Endodontist

When it comes to an average dentist and an Endodontist, they both provide oral care but in different ways. Endodontists specialize in performing root canal procedures, while a regular dentist can do multiple procedures like tooth cleaning and filling cavities.

Knowing the difference between these professions can aid in deciding who to go to for dental treatment. Seeing the proper dental provider can ensure you receive the correct treatments for your oral health issues.

What Does An Endodontist Do?

Endodontists have pursued additional training and experiences post-education. They have trained to perform complex root canal treatments, including re-treatments if a tooth becomes infected after the original root canal procedure. Since they do these procedures regularly, Endodontists have more experience than a typical dentist. Here are a few treatments that they provide:

  • Apicoectomy: Should a root canal fail, an Apicoectomy is a treatment that removes the end of the root to halt an infection’s progress.
  • Treatment Of Traumatic Injuries: The typical procedure for this kind of treatment is the repair of cracked teeth.
  • Internal Bleaching: A treatment used to correct discoloration caused by root canal procedures.

What Does A Dentist Do?

Common dentists are known for cleaning your teeth, placing sealants on them, and filling in your cavities. Their work is essential but is usually surface-level, as they generally don’t have the experience in specific procedures that other specialists do. If they find an oral issue that they’re not an expert in, they can recommend a specialist for that issue, such as an Endodontist.
