Endodontic Procedures After Dental Trauma

Traumatic dental injuries can occur for numerous reasons. For endodontists treating trauma to the roots of the teeth, these injuries can pose serious oral health threats that can lead the tooth to exposure to bacteria that causes infection and decay. Some of the most serious problems with teeth impacted by trauma often occur within the roots of the teeth because while the visible surface of the tooth’s enamel can show the wide range of cracks and chips, micro fractures within the canal and signs of nerve pinching can lead to even greater distress, especially if dentists are unable to diagnose its cause.

How Dental Injuries Are Treated

As endodontists, our specialty involves treating traumatic injuries and focus on restoring the teeth to health through a variety of treatment methods. Here are just some of the ways that endodontists treat the most common types of dental injuries:

Chipped and Fractured Teeth: With chipped or fractured teeth, the tooth crown can be heavily exposed to mouth bacteria and food particles, which in hindsight can lead to root canal infections and potential decay. Endodontists often focus on repairing the tooth first, depending on the severity of the injury and how much tooth loss has occurred.

Knocked-Out Teeth: For teeth completely knocked out, it requires immediate treatment, and an endodontist or general dentist can place it back in its socket and provide stabilization splints for the injury.
